My path to becoming an adventure therapist started with my outdoor experiences growing up and wanting to be outdoors. My education in college started in environmental sciences and forestry and ended in outdoor education.

In his famous essay on the subject, James captures the essence of the discussion in stating, “The experience happens naturally if instructors are skilled enough to take their students safely through the adventurous activities that make up Outward Bound, and when they do that, the mountains are extraordinary teachers indeed” (p. 1). Applied in an AT context, if therapists are working toward the “mountains speak” for themselves side of the spectrum, they allow the client to guide the process in reaction to what the environment and experience is providing for the client.
