10 I remember observing these black professors on campus and wishing I could know them. I did take courses on the history of colonial Africa, and Francophone literature in Africa, with visiting African professors. I felt myself overwhelmed with names and dates, and I found the cultures I was studying exotic and remote. I did not see connections between these places and times and my own. I remember avoiding the few opportunities I had to study American race issues with white professors, either not trusting them or my own ability to sustain the emotional energy I suspected would be required of me.
