No matter how hard they worked, Indians remained subject to the rule of Mexican men, and thus ineligible for the rights of citizens. The Indian population of the Los Angeles region appears to have peaked around the time of the 1820 census, at 28,643. After secularization, this number dropped to 2,553, as most left the missions for the interior valleys. Yet the population in the town itself actually increased, from 200 in 1820, to 553 (of 1,088) in 1836, and 650 (of 1,250) in 1844, as ex-neophytes flocked to Los Angeles in search of work, outnumbering the gentile population.
